3D Imaging For Shrink Sleeve Applications

Printed shrink sleeves have continued to grow in popularity, as they offer brand owners a great opportunity to create eye-catching, 360-degree package coverage to guarantee maximum impact on store shelves.

Still, designing shrink sleeves can pose slight challenges, as the process can sometimes be labor intensive and may involve a number of trial and error steps to get the design right.  Designers often struggle to express artwork for a curved surface on a flat canvas.  Traditionally, designers create grids on shrink sleeve material, wrap it around the container, run it through a shrink sleeve tunnel, measure the distortion of the grids, and try to resize graphic elements based upon these measurements.  The process can be a bit tedious, as the design usually requires several modifications before the distortion is accurate.

If the distortion is not correct, it costs the packager significantly in both time and money.  Beyond sizing issues, packaging color and transparency can be altered because the hue and density of certain areas can shift in instances of extreme shrinking.  If barcodes are distorted, they cannot be scanned sufficiently or consistently.  In addition, different materials hold different shrink characteristics.

In recent years, advancements in technology have made the process of designing shrink sleeves much easier and faster.  Software solutions allow designers and prepress professionals to quickly create, test, analyze, communicate and produce designs with 3D visuals, without the need to conduct physical test runs.
